Inside the World of the ISS Guy

Melillo Consulting is probably already well known to you as an industry leader in the design and implementation of BCS (Business Critical Servers). I have been granted the opportunity to expand awareness of the services we provide in the other server arena, commonly called ISS, and introduce myself as a resource available to you.  So before we go any further my name is William DeMuth and I would like to define what ISS really is.

  • ISS is an acronym for the term Industry Standard Servers, which in the HP universe are the  server products with one of three different prefixes all of which are part of the “Proliant family”.
  • ISS sales (by unit) amount to approximately 85 percent of all servers sold worldwide having supplanted mainframes as the dominant server platform
  • ISS products are classified in the HP environment into three distinct families.

  1. First is the ML Series, a group composed primarily of free standing tower designs now used primarily in smaller or remote data centers, they have been designed to maximize connectivity and internal expansion, and have a price point affordable to small and mid tier organizations.
  2. Secondly, we have the DL series, a rack mounted variety that are the most common variant. DL’s are frequently seen in primary datacenters as Exchange or database servers, or handling other mission critical applications. This series was designed to maximize flexibility, interoperability, and increased server density in increasingly crowded data centers. Their uses and price points cover entry level machines to platforms sufficient for handling the rigors of Ecommerce and other data intensive tasks with a level of reliability professionals have come to demand.
  3. Finally we have the recent development of the BL series which is the culmination of all the lessons learned in the building of the previous branches of the “Proliant” family. These servers, referred to as Blades, have been optimized for all the variables that impact the modern data center, including density, power consumption, and heat generation. They were conceived to be directly interfaced with high density storage products, and special attention was paid to their ability to remain compatible with new and emerging technologies. As sales volume indicates, it seems the BL series is rapidly becoming a new standard.

Melillo’s team of salesmen and engineers have the expertise and knowledge to offer you more than simple commodity pricing on these technologies, because we fundamentally understand that ISS products are as critical today as BCS products, unlike some industry players who consider them simple commodities.

Our philosophy is quite different than many of our competitors because we believe the key to earning business is not selling hardware, but rather offering well conceived and properly designed solutions to help our customers maintain the integrity and flow of their mission critical infrastructure. We maintain resources to assist our clients before, during, and after the sale, so we build enduring business relationships.

To that end, Melillo Consulting is proud to offer the following ISS services:

  • Quick Turnaround time on quotations, with an emphasis on balancing cost with cost effectiveness
  • Detailed technical review of all configurations of our own, or our customers design
  • Concept design and formal configuration building for the expansion of your ISS environment.
  • Procurement and shipment of the all elements of the family including  RAM, ROM, and cabling
  • Assistance in enhancing, upgrading and maintaining your existing ISS base to maximize your ROI
  • Assessments of your environment, including thermal regulation and energy consumption.
  • Assistance and advice in virtualizing you existing data center, or migrating to newer standards

I look forward to working with you all in the future when I can share some of our success stories, but between now and then if our ISS team can offer you any assistance, please contact me at demuth@mjm.com.

Best regards,

William “The ISS Guy” DeMuth
