Software testing trends

Testing is viewed by many companies as a part of the software development process that is crucial to success.

For the majority of the companies questioned, it is particularly the independence of the testers from the development team that is decisive. Nevertheless, many companies admit to not organising their test process adequately. A large proportion of the companies, for example, do not know exactly what human resources or financial resources they employ for testing. This often leads to difficulties: only 20 per cent of the companies have no problems with new software in the first few months after it is introduced. Investment in systematic software testing can improve this quota and thereby create competitive advantages.

These are the central findings of an international study that was conducted by PAC (Pierre Audoin Consultants) at the beginning of 2008. It involved questioning 1,030 management and technical specialists from 12 European countries plus South Africa. The central focus of the study was to establish their views of software testing and their current practices.

The most important results from the study, the International Software Testing Survey, are available in the form of a Software Quality Paper ( detailed results )
