Independent software quality specialist, SQS, gains UK Gambling Commission (UKGC) approved testing house status, to ensure online gambling sites don’t fall foul of new regulatory requirements.

Heavy regulation, ensures that all organisations and players in the online gambling sector have a safe and fair experience. This industry is buoyed by high internet penetration, where the gross gambling yield (GGY) by UK-license online operators now exceeds £1.35 billion[1] a year. If a company fails to test the software behind new online games which contain any element of gambling prior to launching to the market, they are in danger of not only losing out to competition, but could even have their licence revoked.

The UKGC has instructed that any online game with an element of gambling to them[2] – regardless of the platform – has to be tested thoroughly by an independent third-party testing house before they are released on the market. This focus on quality releases ensures fairness and helps avoid such games being rigged for financial benefit.

The approval of SQS as a testing house follows successful completion of the two-stage approval process. This involved satisfying the Commission’s integrity and independence checks, whilst successfully obtaining ISO 17025 accreditation to cover the scope of the Commission’s technical standards and specifications. With UKGC approval, SQS is able to test compliance for remote gambling systems and gambling software.

“When gambling with their money online, consumers need to trust that the games being offered are fair and consistent” says Richard Hartshorne, media and gaming expert, SQS. “Because of this, online gambling sites undergo tremendous scrutiny to meet regulations.

They are regularly audited by government authorities and third parties such as the UKGC to ensure that all their online games are fair, and that all of their random number generators are in fact that – random.”

SQS provides a uniquely scalable testing environment, on a managed service basis and is the only one approved by the UKGC to provide off-shore testing facilities based in its Games Testing Laboratory in Pune, India. This means that SQS now has the ability to act as a strategic quality testing partner for operators, games publishers and platform providers. Customers in the online gambling industry can now benefit from SQS’s existing competences in testing, enablement, agility, performance and automation, with minimal upfront cost.

“We understand the challenges that online gambling companies face,” adds Hartshorne. “The industry is heavily investing in technology and new ways to reach the expanding customer base. There is an increased desire for them to have their own bespoke solutions rather than relying on third party software platforms. Therefore, they are becoming increasingly reliant on software testing to ensure that new games not only work and perform correctly but are fully certified.”

The testing problem is exacerbated by the fact that, typically, online gambling is available across multiple platforms – mobile, tablets, laptops etc. – and on different operating systems – iOS, Android, Windows etc. This means there could be dozens of variants of the same game, each of which need to be tested individually. With the growing popularity of omni-channel, testing is crucial for success in a competitive industry and could even help to prevent potential business loss.

SQS has over ten years’ experience in testing online gambling, in which time it has tested hundreds of different games across multiple platforms for some of the largest gambling organisations. They are now one of the leading credible testing providers, with test house approval from the Alderney Gambling Control Commission, Isle of Man Gambling Supervision Commission, and HM Government of Gibraltar.
